Crystal was born and raised in Middlesex County, in North Brunswick, New Jersey. Crystal received her Bachelor of Arts from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania in 1997 where she majored in History and minored in Asian Studies. Crystal attended the National Conference for Undergraduate Research, where she presented a paper that was published in the Conference's Annual Journal.

Crystal earned her Juris Doctorate from New England School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts in 2000. While at New England School of Law, Crystal received a "Women in the Law Award" for her participation in numerous academic and extracurricular activities.
